Project Story
Project Brief
Willmott Dixon Interiors were appointed under the Scape Major Works framework to deliver the £2 million refurbishment of a former maternity ward. The ward was originally intended to provide flexible Decant Ward space, for a programme of fire upgrades to 8 other wards at Eastbourne General District Hospital in East Sussex.
Project Solution
Our team worked to deliver a rapid pre-construction period, progressing from PCSA appointment to financial close in 4 weeks, including the procurement of key supply chain packages.
The project itself included the re-modelling and internal refurbishment of a former maternity ward, creating new shower rooms, toilets and bed space for patients with medical gas installed. In a live environment our team held daily stakeholder meetings with the adjacent Pathology Lab staff to ensure minimal disruption to existing wards during the construction period. The works also involved installation of new window fenestrations and cladding to the exterior building and courtyards.
Through the delivery programme in November and December, the Trust saw a large increase in hospital admissions due to Covid, putting extreme pressure on their capacity to treat patients. Working alongside our Supply Chain Partners and in liaison with the Trust we accelerated works in order to provide additional bed space as the pandemic took hold. We handed over 6 beds early in late December, only two days later the Trust utilised the space for Covid patients. Our team handed over the remaining 22 beds on 18th January 2021, 11 days early.
